ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) POLICY

1. Introduction

Jurnal Hama dan Penyakit Tumbuhan Tropika : Journal of Tropical Plant Pests and Diseases acknowledges the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting scholarly research and scientific publishing. AI technologies can enhance various stages of manuscript preparation, including literature exploration, language refinement, data processing, and research organization.

Although AI-based tools, including large language models (LLMs) and other generative AI systems, may improve research efficiency, they cannot replace the intellectual contribution, scientific judgment, originality, and accountability of researchers. Authors remain fully responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and authenticity of all submitted work. This policy provides guidance for authors, reviewers, and editors regarding the ethical and appropriate use of AI in the publication process.

2. Permitted Use of AI

Authors may use AI tools as supportive instruments during manuscript preparation, including but not limited to the following:

  • Language editing and proofreading: AI applications may be used to improve grammar, spelling, readability, and overall language quality.

  • Reference management: AI-assisted reference management software may help organize references, format citations, and generate bibliographies.

  • Plagiarism screening: AI-powered similarity detection tools may be utilized to assess originality before submission.

  • Data processing and analysis: AI methods may assist in analyzing datasets, generating visualizations, and presenting research findings, provided that authors verify all outputs and accurately describe the analytical methods used.

3. Prohibited Use of AI

The following uses of AI are not permitted:

  • Generation of original scientific content: AI must not be used to independently produce the intellectual substance of a manuscript, including the research hypothesis, interpretation of results, discussion, conclusions, or other scholarly contributions that require human expertise and critical reasoning.

  • Data fabrication or manipulation: AI must never be employed to fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or misrepresent research data, images, results, or experimental evidence.

  • Unethical research practices: Any AI-assisted activity that compromises scientific integrity, transparency, or publication ethics is strictly prohibited.

4. Disclosure and Responsible Use

Authors who use AI tools during manuscript preparation are expected to:

  • Carefully review, verify, and edit all AI-assisted outputs to ensure scientific accuracy and reliability.

  • Accept full responsibility for the content of the manuscript, regardless of the extent of AI assistance.

  • Transparently disclose the use of AI tools in the Acknowledgments section or another appropriate section of the manuscript. The disclosure should specify the AI application used and its purpose (e.g., language editing, data analysis, or reference management).

  • Cite AI software or tools appropriately whenever their use is relevant to the research or manuscript preparation.

5. Publication Ethics

All authors submitting manuscripts to Jurnal Hama dan Penyakit Tumbuhan Tropika : Journal of Tropical Plant Pests and Diseases must comply with internationally recognized standards of research and publication ethics. Misuse of AI resulting in plagiarism, copyright infringement, falsification, fabrication, or other forms of scientific misconduct constitutes a serious violation of the journal's publication ethics and may result in rejection, retraction, or other editorial actions.

6. Editorial and Peer Review

The use of AI does not alter the journal's editorial standards. Every manuscript submitted to Jurnal Hama dan Penyakit Tumbuhan Tropika : Journal of Tropical Plant Pests and Diseases, whether prepared with or without AI assistance, will undergo the same rigorous editorial assessment and peer-review process based on scientific quality, originality, methodological soundness, and ethical compliance.

7. Policy Updates

This AI Policy will be reviewed periodically to accommodate advances in artificial intelligence technologies, developments in scholarly publishing, and evolving international best practices in publication ethics.
